Putting on a Sound Mind

Crazy in the world; losing their minds; can’t think straight;

Crazy in the church!

We are forced to ask ourselves why? Where does the blame lie?

The basis for what we do and say is the the way that we think

Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…. [we are defined by this, especially to God]

Matthew 12:34 …For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. [acts]

There is a War Going On

Romans 7:22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.

Romans 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

Example of Wrong Mind

Mark 5:1 Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes.

Mark 5:2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

Mark 5:3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains,

Mark 5:4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him.

Mark 5:5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

Mark 5:6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him.

Mark 5:7 And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.”

Mark 5:8 For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!”

Mark 5:9 Then He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.”

Mark 5:10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.

Mark 5:11 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains.

Mark 5:12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.”

Mark 5:13 And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.

Mark 5:14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened.

Mark 5:15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.

Here is the difference between the being in our right mind or not

demonic influence

The way we once were

Ephesians 2:1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,

Ephesians 2:2 in which you once walked [acted] according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,

Ephesians 2:3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

Col_2:18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

Ephesians 4:17 This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind,

Ephesians 4:18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;

Ephesians 4:19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

This the last thing that we want to go back towards

Wrong Direction for us now

Romans 1:24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,

Romans 1:25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

Romans 1:26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.

Romans 1:27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

2 Timothy 3:6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts,

2 Timothy 3:7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

2 Timothy 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith;

2 Timothy 3:9 but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.

Quote parts to sum up sections

Col_1:21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled

Tit_1:15 To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.

Not the way that we are to be now

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

do not be conformed to this world…

Come out of the world just as I am not of the world. BE SEPARATE, Don’t be like the world; don’t let it pull you back into its grasp; don’t become that way again;

But be transformed… metamorphosis

process of changing from what we were to what we are to become in true righteousness and holiness.

Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly [be humble in all of this] than he ought to think, but to think soberly [sōphroneō; 4993], as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

It is by this HS that we begin to see things differently, that is clearly…and we begin to think differently or soberly

1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written: “EYE HAS NOT SEEN, NOR EAR HEARD, NOR HAVE ENTERED INTO THE HEART OF MAN THE THINGS WHICH GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.”

1 Corinthians 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

1 Corinthians 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

1 Corinthians 2:15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.

1 Corinthians 2:16 For “WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD THAT HE MAY INSTRUCT HIM?” But we have the mind of Christ.

??? Receptive Mind; willing mind, a ready mind,

Sound Mind

2 Timothy 1:6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. [4995]

Job 38:36 Who has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart?

G4995 σωφρονισμός sōphronismos so-fron-is-mos’

From G4994discipline, that is, self control: – sound mind.

G4993 σωφρονέω sōphroneō so-fron-eh’-o

From G4998; to be of sound mind, that is, sane, (figuratively) moderate: – be in right mind, be sober (minded), soberly

G4994 σωφρονίζω sōphronizō so-fron-id’-zo

From G4998; to make of sound mind, that is, (figuratively) to discipline or correct: – teach to be sober.

G4998 σώφρων sōphrōn so’-frone

From the base of G4982 and that of G5424safe (sound) in mind, that is, self controlled (moderate as to opinion or passion): – discreet, sober, temperate.

Definition

sophroneo, which is a compound word combining sozo (sode zo) and phroneo

sozo means to be saved or delivered; protect; make whole

phren (frane): the mind or cognitive faculties

intelligence or totality of what our brain does and how it functions

So then the word sophroneo depicts a mind that has been saved from the condition that it was in; made whole and in that sense healed from its previous condition; and is afforded protection from the ravages of self, Satan and society.

When your mind is guarded by God, His spirit and His word, you think differently. When it is allowed to work in your mind, it safeguards you from yourself, others and demonic influences.

Fear, doubt, human reasoning, etc will not reign over you as it once had.

Mind of Christ

Philippians 2:1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,

Philippians 2:2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. [Mentioned previously in Romans 12:3]

Philippians 2:4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,

Philippians 2:6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,

Philippians 2:7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.

Philippians 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

Philippians 2:9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,

Philippians 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,

Philippians 2:11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 3:12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,

Philippians 3:14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you.

Philippians 3:16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind.

Philippians 3:17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.

Philippians 3:18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:

Philippians 3:19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.

Unity of Mind

2Co_13:11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Become complete. Be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Gal_5:10 I have confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his judgment, whoever he is.

Php_1:27 Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,

RECITE: Php_2:2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

1Pe_3:8 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;

1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Think on These Things

Things from above; Godly; Spiritual

Colossians 3:1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.

Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

Good things

Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

Philippians 4:7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Law

Romans 7:25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

Heb_8:10 FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS IN THEIR MIND AND WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.

Love Your Law

Psa_119:97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.

Psa_119:113 I hate the double-minded, But I love Your law.

Psa_119:163 I hate and abhor lying, But I love Your law.

Psa_119:165 Great peace have those who love Your law, And nothing causes them to stumble.

Conclusion

1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious [4993] and watchful in your prayers.

???1 Peter 4:8 And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “LOVE WILL COVER A MULTITUDE OF SINS.”

Loving God Correctly

Matthew 22:36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said to him, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’

Matthew 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.

Matthew 22:39 And the second is like it: ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’

Matthew 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
