We’ve given messages in the past and I recommend that you go back and listen to these for a better understanding on the subject:
The Two Gods of the Old Testament (The Father and the Son)
Introduction
Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!
Mark 12:29 Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL, THE LORD OUR GOD, THE LORD IS ONE.
Defining ONE
H259 אֶחָד ‘echâd ekh-awd’ A numeral from H258; properly united, that is, one
H258 אָחַד ‘âchad aw-khad’ Perhaps a primitive root; to unify
Becoming ONE in the flesh
Genesis 2:24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one [‘echâd] flesh.
Same word
How two become one
sexually, which is one of the meanings
but more importantly it is talking about the marriage vow
the bond between a man and woman
Matthew 19:4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,’
Matthew 19:5 and said, ‘FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH’ ? [quoting Genesis 2:24]
Matthew 19:6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” [There is a union between two individuals that is designed by God to make a man and woman ONE – in a unified manner]
Matthew 19:7 They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?”
Matthew 19:8 He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
They were not to break this marriage covenant – but continue to remain ONE
So what we see here is the concept of two individuals becoming ONE yet keeping their identity and individuality
We know this to be true:
by Moses giving a certificate of divorce
our own marital experience
Marriage was designed this way for a reason
simulate the ONENESS of the relationship the Father and Son have
simulate the ONENESS of the relationship we will have with the Father and Son
Ephesians 5:29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.
Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
Ephesians 5:31 “FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.”
Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Paul is plain about the fact that the ONENESS in a marital relationship represents the ONENESS that we will have with God as members of His family.
Of course the point of this has been that two can be one.
Does this make perfect sense now?
In the same way we begin to see how two Gods are ONE and yet retain Their individuality!
Let’s continue with this same line of reasoning:
As Christians We are to be ONE with God
John 17:1 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son [called this before resurrection] also may glorify You,
John 17:2 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. [JC would once again have eternal inherent as He did before and this He would eventually be able to bestow on us as Christians]
John 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
John 17:4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.
John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
He was asking God to re-glorify Him [Jesus Christ] to His position in the God-head with the Father that He had previously occupied as the Son.
Christ is talking about Him on Earth and the Father in heaven…two different individuals.
John 17:11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.
Two points here:
Jesus Christ was saying that He and the Father are ONE – present tense. (John 10:30 says “are” so this is a legitimate italicized word) [as a side note He is saying the two are one, NOT the three are one]
Jesus Christ was once with God or beside God or alongside God and now that was His position with the disciples. And soon He would return to be with God BUT not in God
secondly, while we are “in the world” we are to be ONE as They are ONE
How does this happen?
We become unified as they are. We are supposed to be living a harmonious life in unity with other Christians [More on this next week in the subsequent message!]
We get a little more clarification and understanding in:
John 17:21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.
John 17:22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:
John 17:23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.
How are We ONE as They are ONE
Romans 12:4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function,
Romans 12:5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
Many can be one and yet individual
Philippians 2:2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
1 Corinthians 6:16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “THE TWO,” He says, “SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.”
1 Corinthians 6:17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
This is how we are ONE with God … by His spirit in us
1 Corinthians 12:12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free [plural]—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
All separate and individual yet ONE
We are not many in an individual, just as God is not three in one.
But we are to be unified as ONE by our spirit, unity, love and etc just as God is ONE in purpose and mind and will.
Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
We are not a trinity in Christ nor do we come one and lose our individuality but rather we become ONE with the Father and Son in the way that they are ONE and have been ONE for eternity – they are one in UNITY!
John 14:20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
This is very clear that they are one individually as well as ONE in unity
Matthew 23:8 But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren.
Matthew 23:9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
Matthew 23:10 And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ.
Same word as before in “one flesh”
1 Corinthians 8:4-8
Used in contrast to idols and false gods
1 Corinthians 8:4 Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one.
1 Corinthians 8:5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords),
1 Corinthians 8:6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.
1 Corinthians 8:7 However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some, with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
Galatians 4:8 But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods.
Isaiah 44:6-8
Isaiah 44:6 “Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.
King of Israel is Jesus Christ
John 12:13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!’ The King of Israel!”
Isaiah 44:7 And who can proclaim as I do? Then let him declare it and set it in order for Me, Since I appointed the ancient people. And the things that are coming and shall come, Let them show these to them.
Isaiah 44:8 Do not fear, nor be afraid; Have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God [Eloah; singular] besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one.‘ “
KJV: Isaiah 44:8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any. [Translators tried to hide the meaning here]
1 Corinthians 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
Now let’s identify Eloah
Proverbs 30:4 Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name, If you know?
Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God [Eloah] is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.
Proverbs 30:9 Lest I be full and deny You, And say, “Who is the LORD?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God. [Elohim]
1 Timothy 2:5
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
1 Timothy 2:6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,
Two Gods mentioned here
John 1:1-3, 14 Jesus was God prior to His first coming
Conclusion
John 10:30 I and My Father are one.”
This does not mean that God is several divisions of a single being NOR
does it mean that God is NOT made up of two separate beings BUT
rather Elohim [plural] shows us that God is a family currently consisting of TWO beings AND
the rest of the story is that this family will soon have many more members that will also be ONE as the Father and Son currently are ONE
