Feast of Trumpets: Meanings of the Day

Introduction

The Feast of Trumpets is the first of the annual Holy Days to occur in the Fall of the year.

There is a multifaceted meaning to the day

A Day of Blowing

Leviticus 23:24 gives us further details regarding the Feast of Trumpets: “… In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a Sabbath-rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.”
Leviticus  23:24  “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a sabbath-rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.
Leviticus  23:25  You shall do no customary work on it; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the LORD.’ ”
Leviticus  23:26  And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying:

Word “trumpets” is implied

Numbers 29:1  ‘And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work. For you it is a day of blowing the trumpets.

Numbers 29:1  And in the seventhH7637 month,H2320 on the firstH259 day of the month,H2320 ye shall haveH1961 an holyH6944 convocation;H4744 ye shall doH6213 noH3808 H3605 servileH5656 work:H4399 it isH1961 a dayH3117 of blowing the trumpetsH8643 unto you.

Teruah” is translated in the KJV: shout, 10 shouting, 8 alarm, 6 blowing, 2 joy, 2 sounding, 2 blow, 1 high, 1 joyful, 1 jubilee, 1 noise, 1 rejoicing, 1 shouted, 1 sound, 1

The Feast of Trumpets is a DAY and a MEMORIAL of blowing or shouting.

Blowing the Shofar

The Bible generally speaks of two kinds of trumpets: silver trumpets and/or shofars.

Silver trumpets were blown on the Feast of Trumpets, as well as on all of the other Festivals and on every new moon (Numbers 10:10).

In addition to blowing on this today, shofars (ram’s horns) were also blown.

Shofars can only produce one sound, which is a loud, piercing blast. ”

So when we talk about “teruah.” This is what it refers to and that is what we are mainly talking about when talk about the blowing or the trumpets

Why Shofars Were Blown

Amos 3:6  If a trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people be afraid? If there is calamity in a city, will not the LORD have done it?
Amos 3:7  Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.
Amos 3:8  A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken! Who can but prophesy?

1 Corinthians 14:8  For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle?

There is a certain sound that will happen in the very near future :

Joel 2:1  Blow the trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm in My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; For the day of the LORD is coming, For it is at hand:

And He will come at the:

The Seventh Trumpet

And they will ALL hear it

Isaiah 18:3  All inhabitants of the world and dwellers on the earth: When he lifts up a banner on the mountains, you see it; And when he blows a trumpet, you hear it.

He is not coming back in secret

Revelation 1:7  He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

Matthew 24:27  For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

EVERYONE alive will experience this awesome event

With the advent of Christ (for a second time) this will be:

A Time of Salvation

Hebrews 9:27  And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
Hebrews 9:28  so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Spiritual

He is coming back to bring spiritual salvation to His firstfruits

1 Thessalonians  4:16  For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
1 Thessalonians  4:17  Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
1 Thessalonians  4:18  Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Though a time of great calamity and upheaval, we are take comfort in the fact that it is the time of our induction into the Family of God

At the time of Christ’s return, those who died in Christ will be resurrected to eternal life; and those in Christ who are still alive, will likewise be changed to immortal life.

1 Corinthians 15:50  Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.
1 Corinthians 15:51  Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—
1 Corinthians 15:52  in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1 Corinthians 15:53  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
1 Corinthians 15:54  So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY.”
1 Corinthians 15:55  “O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING? O HADES, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY?”
1 Corinthians 15:56  The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.

We see the timing of this event

Matthew 24:29  “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Matthew 24:30  Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Matthew 24:31  And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

And we will be raised incorruptible

1 John 3:1  Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
1 John 3:2  Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

Colossians 3:4  When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

But it is not just a spiritual salvation that will occur but a physical one as well

Physical

Jeremiah 30:1  The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
Jeremiah 30:2  “Thus speaks the LORD God of Israel, saying: ‘Write in a book for yourself all the words that I have spoken to you.
Jeremiah 30:3  ‘For behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD, ‘that I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,’ says the LORD. ‘And I will cause them to return to the land [the Promised land] that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.'”

They will be reunited once again.  This has to be in the future!

Jeremiah 30:4  Now these are the words that the LORD spoke concerning Israel and Judah.
Jeremiah 30:5  “For thus says the LORD: ‘We have heard a voice of trembling, Of fear, and not of peace.

[Once again we see the time setting]

Jeremiah 30:6  Ask now, and see, Whether a man is ever in labor with child? So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins Like a woman in labor, And all faces turned pale?
Jeremiah 30:7  Alas! For that day is great, So that none is like it; And it is the time of Jacob’s trouble [Israel], But he shall be saved out of it.

This refers to the Great Tribulation and the day of the Lord, a 3 ½ year time period that is yet in the future and at the end of the age

Jeremiah 30:8  ‘For it shall come to pass in that day,’ Says the LORD of hosts, ‘That I will break his yoke from your neck [a yoke of slavery] And will burst your bonds [set you free]; Foreigners shall no more enslave them.
Jeremiah 30:9  But they shall serve the LORD their God, And David their king, Whom I will raise up for them.
Jeremiah 30:10  ‘Therefore do not fear, O My servant Jacob,’ says the LORD, ‘Nor be dismayed, O Israel; For behold, I will save you from afar, And your seed from the land of their captivity. Jacob shall return, have rest and be quiet, And no one shall make him afraid.

For three-and-a-half years the modern houses of Israel and Judah will be punished and the Gentiles will tread Jerusalem underfoot.

This time is especially identified as the time of Jacob’s trouble—referring to the modern house of Israel. We are told that God will save them OUT OF that terrible time—showing that they will have to first go through it!

Isaiah 27:12  And it shall come to pass in that day That the LORD will thresh, From the channel of the River to the Brook of Egypt; And you will be gathered one by one, O you children of Israel.
Isaiah 27:13  So it shall be in that day: The great trumpet will be blown; They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria, And they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt, And shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.

This will happen after the return of Christ

This day also pictures:

The Transfer of Authority and Rulership of this World

Revelation 11:15  Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”

(ASV)  The kingdom of the world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ: and he shall reign for ever and ever.

Revelation 11:16  And the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces and worshiped God,
Revelation 11:17  saying: “We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, The One who is and who was and who is to come, Because You have taken Your great power and reigned.

Jesus Christ was not tempted by Satan, the god of this world and ruler of it.  He offered Jesus his kingdom, which included all the kingdoms of the world.  Christ said no and qualified to have them any way,  just now without Satan in it.

And it will in turn, rulership and authority will be transferred in part to us

Revelation 2:26  And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations
Revelation 2:27  ‘HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON; THEY SHALL BE DASHED TO PIECES LIKE THE POTTER’S VESSELS’— as I also have received from My Father;

Revelation 3:21  To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

Revelation 20:4  And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
Revelation 20:5  But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
Revelation 20:6  Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

PRESENTLY

Blowing the  Spiritual Trumpet Now

We are to continue to preach the Gospel the entire Gospel and blow the trumpet warning everyone about what God says is coming.

Of course that is a spiritual trumpet, one that should sound the alarm of what is impending

We are to preach it to the:

Modern Nation of Israel

Ezekiel Warning

Ezekiel 33:1  Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Ezekiel 33:2  “Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from their territory and make him their watchman,
Ezekiel 33:3  when he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people,
Ezekiel 33:4  then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head.
Ezekiel 33:5  He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will save his life.
Ezekiel 33:6  But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’
Ezekiel 33:7  “So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me.

This is tantamount to a real watchman not sounding the alarm when he sees an army approaching

Modern House of Israel

Hosea 8:1  “Set the trumpet to your mouth! He shall come like an eagle against the house of the LORD, Because they have transgressed My covenant And rebelled against My law.
Hosea 8:2  Israel will cry to Me, ‘My God, we know You!’

Jeremiah 4:5  Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say: “Blow the trumpet in the land; Cry, ‘Gather together,’ And say, ‘Assemble yourselves, And let us go into the fortified cities.’

The Houses of Judah and Israel were without excuse. They had/have been warned by the prophets.

The Rest of the World

We are blowing the trumpet on this day and throughout year proclaiming what is to come upon the world if they continue to reject God, His Word and His Way.

  • What is going to happen in the Middle East
  • the Beast power and the Babylonian system
  • to every one that assembles to fight against Christ at His return

Anyone of the them could avoid it if they heeded God’s word NOW!

But let’s not get to carried away with the rest of the world.

Joel 2:15  Blow the trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly;
Joel 2:16  Gather the people, Sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and nursing babes; Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, And the bride from her dressing room.

Zion is emblematic of the New testament church and notice the context of Joel:

Joel 2:1  Blow the trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm in My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; For the day of the LORD is coming, For it is at hand:

Our commission in this respect can be summed up like this:

Isaiah 58:1  “Cry aloud, spare not; Lift up your voice like a trumpet [shofar]; Tell My people their transgression, And the house of Jacob their sins.

This is really true for everyone that we are to be proclaiming the Gospel and its message to.  The church is to be functioning in this capacity

Christ’s voice is like that of a trumpet

Revelation 1:10  I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet,
Revelation 1:11  saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”
Revelation 1:12  Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands,
Revelation 1:13  and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band.

We are to be echoing Christs Words and trumpeting them out to the world

Conclusion

The seventh and final trumpet depicts the soon coming of Christ and the establishment of His Kingdom and rule on earth, His judgment upon the nations, the resurrection of those that lived and died in Christ.

Is this one of the Holy Days that we look the more forward to as Christians?
